South Blockhouse – Creative Communities Project

HelloU Creative supported the Hull Maritime South Blockhouse Creative Communities Project at Rooted in Hull, working with local residents to explore the city’s rich maritime and military past.

Through talks led by Humber Field Archaeology, the community uncovered stories of Hull’s ancient defences, including the South Blockhouse, Citadel, Hull Castle, and North Blockhouse. In response, HelloU Creative facilitated creative workshops that produced a collaborative string mural symbolising the roots and connections between Hull’s history and its people.

The piece was enhanced with augmented reality and AI, most notably bringing Henry VIII to life, alongside audio recordings from community members. This fusion of heritage, technology, and co-creation created an immersive way for families to engage with the city’s story while celebrating its cultural identity.
